1888 1c Snow 2 Indian Head Cent PCGS MS 64 BN RPD FS-302
An incredible combination of both a ultra scarce variety in Mint State and exceptional toning on a date seldomly seen with color. This is an 1888 Snow 2 with repunching on all three 8s of the date and a misplaced 1 poking out of the first pearl. This variety used to be considered an overdate (as similar to the pinnacle of Indian Head Cent varieties the 1888/7 Snow 1). However, a debate ensued on the validity of the coin being an overdate and what premium the coin should be priced at. It is now not considered an overdate due to caution of premiums, but an expert metallurgist Christ Pilliod did some research with electron microscope images to show there actually is a 7 under the 8. This coin specifically has a bulging 8 (Die State B) & the coinciding die crack the left side of the wreath of the reverse (Die State B). A PCGS MS 64 RB S-2 CAC & PhotoSeal just sold for $7,250 on Eagle Eye Rare Coins as the finest-known example. This example is a shot 64 in our eyes with its beautiful purple & iridescent toning. A trophy coin and Top 20 variety of the series.
